When does size matter ?

I am using Hooker Long tubes (#2231) which have primary tubes of 1 3/4" So when should you step up to bigger size 1 7/8" or 2" primaries ?
BTW this is for a LT1 396cid supercharged .
Also who makes a good 1 7/8" or 2" LT1 header ?

Just a thought, but one of the most powerful LT1's (1,125HP) used 1.75" Hooker LT's. For the next engine to go into that car, at about 1,300HP, he is running custom made 2" primaries. Both engines are 383's with Vortech blowers.
Might give you an idea of the info you are looking for.
In any case, this belongs on LT1 Tech, not on Advanced Tech. Moving......

Don't know anyone who makes a 1-7/8 for the F-body. You'll have to go to a custom outfit like Rewarders, Lemons or build your own.
Just to give you another idea...
I built a 383 some years ago for a 66 Nova bracket car. At that time I was running a 1-3/4 Hooker header. That engine dynoed at just over 600 hp and 510 lbs-ft of torque. She dropped a valve and while I had the engine out for repairs replaced the Hookers with a set of Stahl 1-7/8 unequal length headers (never seen gains from equal length)... the engine picked up an average of 7 lbs-ft in the midrange (right where each shift landed me on the rpm drop) and picked up a very consistent 3 tenths and 2 mph at the track.

If you ever decide to try to build a set (as I am) you might want to check out Burns stainless, Headers By Ed and Stahl. They all make the mandrel bent tubing and collectors. Burns has a neat website... well worth checking out.
