wheel size

I was in the proccess of getting new wheels and tires for my car (getting rid of the stockers) and getting something like 18x10s in the back and 17x9 in the front. my question is will this setup fit on a 1995 trans am or is some kind of modification in order?? i wanted the best proformance for street/daily driving. whats your guys' opinion on this? too big? too small? perfect? thanks for the help.

You may be better off posting this in another forum, as this is for engines. But wheels in those sizes will certainly fit with the correct backspacing, if that's what you are asking. Larger wheel diameter with a shorter sidewall tire will generally give better handling due to the stiffer sidewall but a harsher ride, but a lot depends on the precise tire chosen. Wider tires generally have better traction but less directional stability and more rolling resistance. Larger diameter wheels will allow larger brake rotors to be fitted, but a larger diameter combo is usually heavier.

It's all tradeoffs. But I will say that the current trend toward very large diameter wheels is largely a style thing. In general, I think a 17" wheel front and rear is good for a 4th gen. My own choice in wheels is 17x9"F and 17x9.5"R with 275/40/17F and 285/40/17R. These will fit with no body modification. Some people use 315/35/17 in the rear and this requires quite a bit of fiddling and also sticks out beyond the fender. Some people like this look, but I don't. However, that wide a foot print in the rear will definitely improve traction. If you do a search on this you will get a lot of info.

I run 315/35/17's on 11" wide Kinesis wheels out back. Fit fine with no overhang in the rear but it's all in getting the correct offset. That and perhaps lining the rear up with an adjustable panhard rod.... mine was fine though without adjusting.

Here are a few pictures. The first being a 335/35/17 setup and the others with 315's.
