Whats wrong?! Codes 310? 420?

I have no idea what to do at this point. My service engine soon light has been on now for over 3 months. at first it would come on and go off, every week or so. Now it just stays on. I took it to have the diagnostics done and the shop told me crazy things. They told me the codes and they said their computers did not say exactly what the problem was. They said that the computers were saying to replace the cap and rotors on my distrubutor, then if that didnt work do "this" then if THAT didnt work, do "this" and so on and so forth! I was like WHAT?! They went on to say that the labor was going to cost me $400 for the cap and rotors and the parts another $300 or so. I'm not sure what to do....i called the dealer and they said the labor would be $250 and parts about the same....but im sure when they see the engine light on, they'll want to do a diagnostics too...there's another $90 for that....and are they going to say the same thing? WE REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS? by the way the codes basically told them that there was an engine misfire at idol only....STUMPED!

hey thanks for the advice on the 02 sensor, thats what I thought was the problem initially. As for the other code, it was PO 300 i believe, sorry for the mis-info. I had to refer to my records for that one. well, let me know what you think. thanks a lot for your help.

a missfire can damagde the cats, I would start with that however a pluged cat can cause a missfire. I would do the simple stuff and find out why you are missing. fuel pressure and ign testing
