Question Whats valve float/coil bind-How do i know

Im probaly going to upgrade this CC-501(212/218) to a CC-502 cam- 218/224--got the Pro Mags 1.6 rockers and springs installed with my first cam. I just want to change out the cam, so when i have this done, what are the symptoms of valve float or coil bind, so that i know that these springs need to be replaced for this slightly bigger cam? Thanks for your help. Dwayne

Re: Whats valve float/coil bind-How do i know

The CC-501 lift i read with my 1.6 rockers is 520i/528e and this CC-502 is .528/.536 with 1.6--But im lost on the specs of my springs i got now-i got them with a package deal from Racenet, only thing i can tell ya is they are double spring of some sort, cant be rated to high i quess since they knew what cam was going in--wild guessing its around .550, i would assume.--But again if they arent right for this CC-502, what are the symptoms of valve float or coil bind? What happens so i might now whats going on if it happens. Thanks Dwayne

Valve float, bounce, and toss are all caused from the springs not being heavy enough to control the mass of the valve train.
Coil bind is when the springs become solid between the coils from not sufficent installed height. There needs to be .050 between coils at max lift to be safe. You don't want it to coil bind it will tear up a bunch of stuff--talking a new engine here--the least is a bunch of bent pushrods the worst is a dropped valve or more than one.

Thanks for the help, i know im looking really dumb, but when does this happen?, If its at high rpm im probaly gonna be safe as i doubt i will be in the 5000 rpm range for a long period, if ever--since the lift of thes cams are close i guess i will be ok then???

Doesn't make any differance how long you are in an RPM range, but yes it happens more as RPM's increase. It doesn't depend on the lift at all it's ramp speed.
Coil bind happens at any time, even rolling it over by hand.
If you are going to get the full benefit from the cam ya need to shift above 6000.
