whats the point of a shifter in an auto?

why do people buy aftermarket shifters for autos..?

Looks I guess. I'd like to replace my Z's shift *** with a T/A one. Tried once but couldn't get it to work. One of these days I'll give it another go.

Those with manual valvebodies can manually shift the car using a ratchet type shifter... for a computer controlled tranny I don't think it would do much.
