Whats normal RPM???? Please help

I was driving down the street today and i noticed that if i got up to 50 mpg i had about 3,000 rpm but if as soon as i hit 50 and then let go of the gas the rpm dropped to 1,000 is this normal? Also at a red light it showed about 500rpm is this normal too? Im having serious probelms with my car where if i step on the pedal all the way it takes me about 10 secs to get to 20mpg but after that my cars picks up fine until i stop again........

well its normal for it to drop but i guess not that much also you dont say if ur auto or manual, but i'm assuming automatic.... so when u jump on it and try to accelerate it seems that ur tranny is not downshifting properly... so u might have transmission problems.. try getting ur tranny fluid changed..

You should get some engine braking when you let go of the throttle unless you hit the brake. If your engine is revving up and you are not going anywhere, then the tranny is slipping. Check the fluid level and condition (like if it is dark and smells burnt).
