What's the most HP and Torque for a stock steel driveshaft?

How much power could I make and still run a stock driveshaft? I'm doing my mods and wonder if I should upgrade. I'll be doing a cam from cmotorsports.com, SLP headers, high flow cat, and some suspension stuff. The cam is a 224/230, .536/.534 Thanks for any input.

I would go ahead and change it out to a balance aluminum one. (LS1)With all of that power in an unbalanced, steel one, i just dont know. And you will free up a coulple of ponies with a lighter aluminum or carbon fiber one. But i have heard of a few guys with some pretty good power that still have stock ones.

If the stock steel one is not causing any problems, I really wouldn't switch to a weaker aluminum one. It may be lighter and free up a few ponies, but it's nothing you'd even notice. The stock LS1 driveshafts haven't exactly proven themselves in the durability department.

If you're hell bent on an aluminum one, I'd suggest an LPE one or see what Denny's has to offer.

FWIW - I've been using the stock steel DS with a 224/230 537/544 112 XE (1.6 pro mags), 1¾" headers, 3" exhaust, ORP, CSI, pcm tune, CAI, blah, blah, blah for about a year now. No problems.

Stick with your steel one.

here is what happened to my friends Ls1 Aluminum DS and he was only running a CAI and Catback with Drag Radials.

Hope that helps,

I don't think you would have to worry about breaking the stock DS with the mods you have planned, it would probably hold much more than that even. Lots of people have vibration problems with the stock one though, if you have any now it will be worse at the higher rpms you will probably be running with your new combo. If you have any vibrations now I would recommend a 1LE aluminum shaft, new it's only about $15 more than an LS1 and a good bit stronger. I got one for $235 new.

Thanks for all the replies. So, from what I saw here, the LS1 driveshaft is weaker than the LT1 is, is the 1LE stronger than the steel one? Or is it just a little stronger than the LS1 piece?

Out of the three: Stock steel > 1LE > LS1

I have never heard of anyone breaking their stock steel ds, have heard of a few people breaking a 1LE and many people breaking an LS1. Most of them that have broken one have done so while launching at the track with sticky tires, you are not likely to break either of them on the street with street tires.
