What's making this ticking sound??

It's not an out of adjustment valve. (checked them all while running.)
I don't believe it's an exhaust leak. (stock manifolds, never touched)
And I don't think it's an injector. (Can I safely check them while they are running by pulling plugs one at a time?)
I do know it's coming from the driver side. (Or are at least pretty damn sure)

What else can make the ticking sound?

I'm using Mobile1 5W15 (don't give me S about that, just tell me something if it's related) and changing the oil doesnt do anything to reduce the noise. (duh)

A while ago I tried some injector cleaner for the hell of it, and it sounded like it got louder (and has since stayed "louder")

It's not a scary tick, just an annoyance.. kind of like I am torwards this board with these silly questions..

Please help guys.. Any suggestions will be taken serously.

Get a stethascope or a long screwdriver and find out exactly where the noise is coming from. From what I understand, some ticking is normal on LT1s due to the injectors. This is what was causing my tick.

Sorry, but does it ever go away? Like when cold or after car heats up? Does the ticking increase with engine rpm?

that will work fine for injectors but if it's an exhaust leak, the steth/screwdriver may not detect it. get a piece of hose {about 5/16" x 3'} and put one end in your ear and use the other end to probe around the manifolds. you'll need to get the end of the hose real close to the leak in order to hear it, but this will narrow it down to the exact location of the leak.

The sound is there from cold start to full running temp and everywhere between.

It is in exact synchronation with the engine RPM

It might be me, but I do think it get slightly (only slightly) louder under deceleration. But it might just be me..

I was wondering cuz mine went away after car heated up (things expanded?) Mine was a loose exaust bolt. All on drivers side you can get to and just check the torque on all of them? Either that or the gasket just developed a leak over time.

Good luck.

I had a spark plug wire that was loose and made the same ticking sound. I guess it was arcing. Would increase with engine RPM's. Something to check.

Check and see if it is the PCV. I know mine is loud as heck. But I do feel as if I might be having an exhaust issue on the driver side too.

Well thanks for the tips guys..

I'll try to get under the car tomorrow if I'm not working..

I will tinker with the plugs and wires if I can.. I'll also try the hose trick to pinpoint the tick source..

Thanks again guys.. You all rock.

Does it do it at certain RPM's. I just read this post and thought...."hey my car does that." I can hear mine ticking when I reach around 2500 r's. Sounds like a lil exhaust leak. Very very little.

It's pretty much audible most rpm's (of course it varies with the RPM), but gets hard to hear above 2000 or so because the exhaust is quite loud.
I can hear it at higher RPM's if I'm going inder a bridge or something..

I'll try to check out the plug wires today..
