Whats entailed in removing T-56 from LT1(short block)

I recently took everything off the short block. I was going to change everything with the engine inside the car. But no I deceided to remove it. All thats left is the short block connected to the tranny.

Its a T-56..

What do I need to do to pull the block out?

Thanks BUBBA. LOL

I mean like can i just unbolt the block to the trans. I never did this before on a 6 speed car. I know how on an automatic car with the converter and all.

But how do I do it with the manual tranny??

It will be easier if you remove the shifter from the tranny, unbolt the slave cylinder and remove it, and unbolt the tranny from the bell housing. Pull the clutch fork off the throwout bearing, and the tranny will slide backwards and out (118#). Put a cut off coke bottle in the tailshaft housing and duct tape it, to prevent gear lube from pouring out the end of the tailshaft when you tilt the back of the tranny downwards.

Now you are left with the bell housing and the clutch bolted to the engine. You can remove those if you want.

(damn, 3 mins late)

what u need to do is removed the TRANS from the bell housing first.. remove the trans then the bell housing.. you wont be able to get the bell housing out with the trans when its in the car.. ALSMOT can, but not quite..

so, first, remove the clutch slave cylinder. then give the clutch fork a yank to disenguage it from the throwout bearing. then removed about 10 bolts from the trans to bell housing. the bottom ones will be easy, the top ones are not so easy, but u can make it alot easier with long extension gettin if from the back of the trans.

you need to removed the drive shaft from the diff first, then from the trans. se it aside. then unbolt the torque arm. then go in the car and take out the center conuncel and boot for the shifter. then remove 4 bolts holding the shifter in. remove shifter.

then support the back of the trans with a jack and removed the cross member. support the whole trans and pull back evenly. make sure not to let the trans drop down or go on an angle, you can brake the clutch disk that way.

trans removed.

When I do that...do I have to support the tranny? or the crossmember able to hold it?

well then..

how r u taking the engine out, the top?..or bottom>?

I would say that if your taking it out the bottom, then just leave it attached.

if you want to go out the top, then you need to removed the trans completly first. you cant move the engine forward to get the trans input shaft out of the engine.

you need to make the tranny movable.. by removing the cross member, and driveshaft.. and torque arm... so u can move it back to get it off the engine. then u can pull the engine straight up.

actually. what am i thinking. im sure you can keep the trans hooked to the block to pull it out the top..

I Really dont want to remove the tranny. I'll just remove it from the bell housing and keep it in there.

Do yourself a solid: remove the hood and pull the block, along with the tranny out the top and call it good. As long as you are going to do the block, you might as well do some R&R on the tranny and make sure every thing is ready to go when you reinstall the engine. JMHO

I yanked mine out from underneath, laid it on my chest and then rolled it onto a cart.
