What's the difference between mini starters and normal starters?

What's the difference between mini starters and normal starters?
Just a few questions I was wondering about, after looking at some starters. How many teeth does a 1994 Z28 A4 need, 153 or 168? What is a "In line bolt" and a "offset bolt" pattern? Thanks.
