Whats a descent price for head resurfacing?

I found pretty much one of the only shops that do it in Iowa City. He said 45$/piece + 10$/piece to clean them up before putting them in the resurfacing machine. That includes inspection and whatnot. Sound descent?

Also how much of a mill do they normally do or does that depend on the warpage? Is a mill always recommended for a car which overheated/blown gasket or only to correct warpage?

Also how much would compression increase when these milled heads are combined w/ a felpro 1074 head gasket. I have heard 10.4:1 > 10.7:1 for just the gasket. How much more will the mill effect it and is it dangerous?

I just payed 165 to have both heads surfaced, a valve job, and replace one bent exhaust valve, just for comparison. I'm not sure if that is a good deal or not but my shop does good work so I don't care.

As for the milling, it will be as much as is needed to flatten the head back out. And there is no possible way to tell you what the compression bump would be.

We would need to know what pistons you are using, piston to deck clearance, etc etc etc.

I would say a little milling with a smaller gasket and stock pistons is not going to put you in the danger zone with premium fuel.

We charge $55.00 to surface a pair of heads up to .010". A normal clean up mill will be in the .005-.010 range depending on warpage. If you blew a head gasket, they may require a little more than .010" depending on how bad they are of course. The average around Central florida is $50.00-$75.00 to surface a pair of heads. Although we charge $30.00 to glass bead and clean a set so your coming out just about right with that shop. One thing is though, if they use an old school machine to do the surfacing, tell them to speed the spindle up to get the proper R/A finish (typically 25-40 ra).

If the head warped I would be worried about it having softened the casting too.

The Felpro gasket is still fairly thick no compression worries.
