whats the deal with the SLP short throm shifter
The SLP shifter is the same one that could be had as an option on the SS. It is a "cheapened" version of a Hurst Competition Plus shifter. It differs from the Hurst in that it requires you to reuse the stock shifter lever with rubber bushing.... so it still has the tendency to feel rubbery. Then the cover plate is a thinner gage metal than the "real" Hurst. And of course niether the Hurst Comp + or the SLP has shifter stops, which were added later on the Hurst Billet Plus.
I had a Hurst Comp +, compared it to a shifter that came off a spare T56 that I bought out of a 97 SS, and the SLP was not up to the Hurst. Later I swapped to the Pro 5.0, and it was a work of art compared to the Hurst, and shifted a lot better.

Not sure what rubber bushing you're talking about but mine never had one, and I don't know where it would go?
The SLP shifter is a great upgrade from stock, and honestly I haven't felt all that much difference between it and the Pro 5.0 I have now. Sometimes I think I might have wasted $160. The Pro 5.0 is a solid piece, but I didn't get any night/day difference between them.

Did you ever look closely at the stock shifter lever? There is a rubber bushing concentric with the shaft, at the base. It is not removable.... it is built into the space between the shaft and the mounting end.
This guys auction has a good picture of a stock shaft with the bushing VS an aftermarket shaft with no bushing.

A buddy of mine upgraded his factory SS shifter and I now have his factory one installed in my Z. I notice a difference over the factory Z shifter, but it's not like a Pro5.0 or similar aftermarket.
If you can get a Hurst shifter out of an SS for cheap - free, then I say it's worth it; but if you are going to spend $$ on one, I would save up for a better one.
Thomas.
