Whats the best way to store LT1 heads?
Whats the best way to store LT1 heads?
I got my spare aluminum LT1 heads in today. They will not get ported any time soon so they will be in storage.
What is the best way to store these so they don't warp or get damaged?
I want to put them in my attic which will get hot in the summer time.
Thanks

Mine are just covered by a towel in my garage sitting on top of an old dryer in the corner. I don't think you have to do anything special. Since you are having them ported I wouldn't even worry about cleaning them up since they will get tanked by the porter before he begins.

Well, I wouldn't expect them to become warped from the sort of temps you see in your attic.
If it was me, I would use some spare lumber to build a convenient device to hold them. I'll leave the design up to you.
Beyond that, I like plastic bags and dirty oil. Why DIRTY oil?
Because dirty oil sticks to metal surfaces quite well where clean oil won't. I suspect it has something to do with surface tension and the ability of the dirt to provide a sort of a structure for the oil. Used engine oil works well.
Some folks might object to that based on acids in the oil. Myself, I've been using this trick so long that when I began, Jim Morrison was still alive. I have never seen any problems from it, probably because we're talking about trace amounts of very weak acids. Think about it... Ever burned your hand with used oil? Other than from heat I mean...
If you really hate the idea, then used tranny fluid will work too. Or if you insist on clean oil, ordinary gear oil will work.
All these ideas clean up fairly easily with various methods, such as hosing them down with brake cleaner.
For the bags, you can get nice big ziplocks at Lowes or Home Depot. You can also use ordinary trash bags. All you really want to do is keep the insects from making a home in your heads. Summit and Jegs even sell bags MEANT for engine and part storage.
Coat the heads, making sure you get all the nooks & crannies so that you protect them from oxidation. Put them in the bags and either zip or tape them up. Then place them in the wooden device you threw together to keep them from just banging around and you're good.
Re: Whats the best way to store LT1 heads?
If they're going to be worked on, just throw them in the corner and let them collect dust. Its not going to matter. Otherwise Id spray them with wd40 and put them in a trash bag if you're really worried about it.
