What is your choice for rear end fluid
What is your choice for rear end fluid
What are you guys using for rear end fluid? Also how much do I need and where did you get it? I know I need limited slip additive as well right? Thanks in advance.

Re: What is your choice for rear end fluid
You could go with Royal Purple gear oil. It already has the additive in it. You will need 2 quarts and possibly a hand pump b/c it is kind of pain getting the fluid in there.

That might help you and, yes, if you have a limited slip rear end you'll want to use the additive... at least I would. Heck, in the above guide I even used the additive with a Torsen. LOL!

Re: What is your choice for rear end fluid
hey, make sure to get a new gasket as well
definately take a look at brent's site, it made it a cinch to do
i think i just got valvoline or something
i'm not sure it matters, just change it at 30k or whatever is reccommended and you'll be fine i think
good luck

Re: What is your choice for rear end fluid
Based on the recommendation of the shop that set up my rear end I will
now use regular 80W-90 hypoid gear lube plus Auburn additive. Since the
unit is an Auburn, and it says right on the additive bottle that the use of
"non-synthetic" lube is recommended, I will stop using synthetic. Besides,
I think the pinon seal leak that many of us have is a result of using the
synthetic lube. I have looked under many fbodies and almost all of them
have a pinon seal leak.

Re: What is your choice for rear end fluid
My Strange 12 Bolt came with instructions NOT to use synthetics. I thaught that was weird so I gave them a call. What they told me is that synthetics have a tendency to fly off the gears, therefore not providing as good of lubrication as regular gear oil. They said under normal driving the synthetics should be OK, but they highly recommend using regular gear oil plus the GM additive, especially under hard applications.
Re: What is your choice for rear end fluid
I'm going to be switching from synthetic to the original gear oil hopefully in the next week... I still have the stock unit, but I've noticed that the rear end is a slight bit louder with synthetic and sometimes while acellerating hard in a tight turn the POSI doesnt seem to kick in quite right... I have a feeling that a 75W90 Synthetic may be more of a difference than i originally thought from the original spec 80W90 GL5 dino oil.. *shrug* Will post results here...
Re: What is your choice for rear end fluid
I've used both redline and mobil 1, no pinion seal leaks ever. Synthetics not being good for performance is myth.
Not to mention Redline shockproof is probably the best climbing gear oil there out there.

Hah.... I use the additive in my Torsen too, lol...
I use Mobil 1 synthetic in car.
