What would you do to pass emissions?

Hey all,

Have a nice 383 LT1 with some worked AFR 190 heads I will be putting in the RX7 soon. Here is the deal: Arizona is a sniffer state and I really want to pass emissions. Tried to get the actual PPM's needed to pass on NOx, CO and HC but they would not give it to me.

The RX7 has no cats. I have a stock cam, LT4 Hot Cam and a undetermined custom, but radical (24X/25X range), cam I will get ground soon.

What is my best bet? No cats and stock cam? Cats and custom cam?

I really don't want to both cat the car and have to do a cam change. Thankfully these RX7's are so easy to work on, you can pull and engine in 4 hours with manual tools and have a cam swap done in a weekend. Cam change is my preferred direction to go.

depending on what exactly they are looking for i think you might have a hard time passing without cats. and without the small cam

how often does it need to be inspected?

You'll probably have to do both, without the cats though, your chances of passing are slim to none.

They don't do physical inspections only sniffer. I think once a year. I can put in cats and take the out easy enough. It is just a pain in the *** to go buy used cats somewhere and getting them installed.

You need cats, the cleanest running car will still fail without them. i say you have a good chance of passing with even a wild cam and cats. make sure the car is HOT!!!

just put the cats in with flanges, then make a set of test pipes. 20 min change outs.

If you feel its that easy, than do just that, once a year put the small cam and cats for testing only, then run no cats and custom cam during the rest of the year.

yeah thats what i was gettting at and i think it would be the best bet, like stated before just have the cats mounted with flanges for a quick easy swap
