What would you do in my situation with $5,000
What would you do in my situation with $5,000
I am selling my other car, a 99 chevy prizm, and am expecting around 5 grand for it. My options are as follows:
1. Take the 5 grand and pay off the TA and have no money left over
2. Buy a new tranny to handle 650hp and also buy a procharger (4.5-6psi)
3. Gears/Converter/tranny to handle 650hp/ other stuff...
What do u guys recommend? I can get the tranny for around $1300 or so. Also, I bring in about $1200 after taxes a month and live at home for now (I am 21) while im in school. Also, my car payment right now on the TA is only $190...

i would pay it off too.. better to have it paid off. then miss a payment one day and come out to find the car repoed or something and all that money gone with it.
Re: What would you do in my situation with $5,000
By selling the Prizm, will that make the TA your only means of transportation? If it will, I say pay it off. 6lbs. of boost will only turn your rearend into a ticking timebomb. I've always subscribed to the philosophy that it's wiser to build a car from the back to the front, but that's just me. If something ends up breaking, (which is a high probability with a supercharger), you'll: (A) be stuck making payments on a car you can't drive, which sucks, and (B)have to borrow cars or bum rides from people to get to work so you can make money to pay for parts to fix that car, which sucks even more.
Just pay it off.
Just pay it off.

Pay it off.
Freeing up a payment frees up money every month, and you can still use that to save up for your mods.
Mod-wise, thesoundandthefury has it right -- back to front. Get yourself a 12-bolt and all of the rear suspension pieces (in addition to what your sig says is in the mail, you should probably get a torque arm). Then build up the tranny, and then the supercharger and all of the engine stuff.
IMO, spending a ton of money all at once on mods makes it difficult to tell how each mod affected the car. Personally, I want to do one mod at a time so that I can feel the changes and get used to the way the car behaves afterward. Of course, there are some mods that it's okay to lump together -- new gears along with your 12-bolt, or all of the rear suspension pieces at once, or front suspension and upgraded brakes at the same time, or new heads at the same time as RRs or other valve gear.

Re: What would you do in my situation with $5,000
I just realized that I have a few more grand in my savings lol. So I'd have about 7,000 to 7,500 to spend if I wanted. Yeah I was planning on paying it off the whole time, but its just so tempting to spend the money once i have it in hand. I've always read that my rear will break if i launch it hard on slicks... So If I'm not launching it hard, then would it just break while im driving WOT with that much power?? A 12 bolt and 3.73 sure do sound nice... With the money, i "could" get a 12 bolt, gears, and a tranny and still have money left over for future repairs that i could keep at my side for safety... hmmm The motor i have now only have 25,000 miles on the rebuild so it should be in good shape... runs strong.
Re: What would you do in my situation with $5,000
At speed, it would take a metric pantload of horsepower to break the rear. With an auto, I think you're probably safe. I wouldn't do any 5mph 5000rpm neutral drops though...
How much do you owe on the car?

Re: What would you do in my situation with $5,000
I would go for the 12 bolt and gears and then use whatever is rest towards paying it off. If you spend 2,000 on a 12 bolt, you could still have 5000 or so towards paying it off.
Or..... You could give me a few grand so I can get my 12 bolt and 3.73's

Re: What would you do in my situation with $5,000
I owe about $7500 on the TA, so I could pay it off and have no money left over if I wanted. Oh and I would NEVER NEVER NEVER do any sort of neutral drop, that is just stupid. My buddy did that in his bmw in highschool and broke the tranny with me in the car lol. No good. 12 bolt w/ 3.73's, built tranny, 3200 stall, and the rest for future repairs sounds good. That'd cost around $4,000-$4,500. I'm just not sure yet. Very indecisive...
