What would make THIS noise!!

While my car is idleing i can hear what appears to sound like a supercharger belt whining.....i mean if ppl didn't know you would think one was on my car.....is it a bad belt....the reason i don't think it is...is b/c when i accerlate it don't sqeal like a belt slipping or going bad

what do you guys think it is

i can take a video of my car idling and mail it to ya if you think that would help solve my problem.....theres no hp lose or anything no codes nothing but a as i stated above a supercharger type sound not a SQUEAL coming from the engine bay

Re: What would make THIS noise!!

It may be your alternator or one of your pulleys.

Re: What would make THIS noise!!

Do you have a supercharger? That could be it

Take your belt off to narrow it down to an accessory. Check the belt tensioner and anything else that spins. Is your ps reservoir full?

no, take the belt off, then start the engine, if the noise is gone, turn the engine off, then turn the pulleys by hand(crank pulley on the bottom wont turn) , they should all turn smooth(might have slight resistance from the P/S pulley, but it will turn ok

oh i'm sorry......i wasn't sure you could start the engine with the belt off the car......i'm not questioning your expertise but are you sure that won't hurt my engine running w/o a belt?

water pump is cam driven, plus you won't need to run it for more then 30 seconds to 1 minute

Re: What would make THIS noise!!

Sometimes alternators have a high pitched cycle noise that is due to its charging the bat. It can't be elimanated without changing the alternator and you still may have the noise with a new one.

Re: What would make THIS noise!!

I have been trying to fix the same thing.

So far I have replace the alternator, PS pump and the belt. I am pretty positive it is my AC compressor. because it has been low for quite awhile and because there is not much left. Good luck

Re: What would make THIS noise!!

You can safely crank the car without the belt on. Be careful of moving parts though when it is on. I have bad visions of what could happen if a piece of you gets caught in a belt but at least it has kept me safe.

If you can get a stethoscope or even a long screwdriver, you can pinpoint where it is coming from. Just put your ear up to the screwdriver handle and the point on whatever object you are listening to.

Re: What would make THIS noise!!

absolutely be careful around moving parts, i saw a sun dianostic machine arm and all to leads pulled into a engine compartment , almost tipped the machine over, loose clothing can cause the same thing , turn the air coditioner on and off to see if the noise changes
