what are the visible differences between...
a 400 and a 350? dont know where to post this so i figured i would try it here. friend says he has a 350 in his s-10 but we think it could possibly be a 400 block so just trying to find some ways to identify it.
Re: what are the visible differences between...
Several clues. On a stock 400 the crank is externally balanced so if you look at it the balancer will look like it has a big cutout on half of it. On the block, most 400 blocks have 3 freeze plugs on the side instead of 2 like a 350. Some versions of the 400 only have two freezeplugs but have a boss cast is the side that looks like there should be a freezeplug machined in there. Another giveaway is the casting number. Most 400 blocks had a casting number ending in 511 or 509 instead of the most common 350 casting of 010 for that year range.
