What type of tranny fluid? Dextron III or V?
I know that the A4 normally takes Dex III. If I were to put in Dex V would it harm the tranny? I've been told that Dex V has fiction modifyers in it that make it better than Dex III. I work at a Ford dealer and all they use now is Dex V for everything. Whats the difference between the two?
Thanks,
Thanks,
DexV is specially formulated for Ford AOD and AODE transmissions. It seems that standard old DexIII couldn't keep the torque converter in AOD from getting a low speed slight acceleration shudder from happneing. The fluid was to thin when warm to keep the converter from acting up. I don't think there is any harm in putting in it a 4l60e, but its not really necessary.
The other thing that has to be done on the fords is to add an extrenal oil cooler along with the factory radiator cooler.
If you do decide to switch fluids it is best to drain the converter as well, it holds a great deal of the 13 or so quarts of fluid in your transmission. But since there isn't a drain plug (or at least i don't think there is) on the 4l60 you may have to take it to a quick lube and have them "flush"(i won't get into how I really feel about this type of "flush" system here) the system with about 20 to 25 quarts of fluid to ensure you get as much of the old fluid out as possible. When I worked at a jiffy lube we determined that it took about that much extra to get all the dirty fluid out. The fluid was coming out clean at around 20 quarts in.
