What size exhaust?

I have a 94 z28, and am about to get a new exhaust for it. I'm planning to get headers (later on) and beat out my cat and put on a dynomax bullet muffler. I was wondering if I should get 3 inch or 2 and a half inch exhaust. I was told that GM put on the factory sized exhaust because fuel injected cars need the backpressure and that 3inch would be too much. Could someone please help? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

NO, your car will be a lot better off with a 3" cat-back exhaust(even on a stock car). 3.5" wouldn't hurt either. Backpressure is bad for our cars and don't listen to those at GM.

You can never go wrong with the 3''. It makes the car nice and loud and really picks up the flow. Make sure you get the catback system.

3 inch pipes are good. Most of the gain in power will come from the lower restriction muffler though. The stock pipes are 2.75" so don't go with anything smaller. If you want to see most of the gain and keep the stock stainless pipes, just replace the muffler. Unless you are planning on some serious power, anything larger than 3" isn't going to help much.

Well, if your gonna get some headers later on, go with the 3'' cat back. Headers on stock pipes could probably hurt you.

On basic set up, especially with headers, you're gonna want those 3" pipes. I'm still running stock pipes and my car can barely breathe!!

4" might hurt you...unless you got some head work, a nice cam and some long tubes, that is.

I was planning on getting the 3in pipes with a dynomax bullet muffler and getting the exhaust dumped, would that be a bad idea, should i stick with a regular oval muffler (like flowmasters or something similar to it). thanks for the help

Either is viable. It's a personal preference on how loud you want the car to be and the sound quality. If you run the exhaust in the stock location, you won't have to deal with clearance issues.

For all of you who didn't use a catback and used a bullet muffler, where did you install it at? Or if you know where the best place to install it is, any help would be great. Thanks.

Thumbs up

I'm getting some 3 inch piping for my car to weld from the Borla muffler to a high flow cat. Should sound/flow awesome.

I want to run a single cat because true duals are too expensive. Where is the optimum place to put the bullet muffler (or should I just go with the oval mufflers in stock location) and should I get a high flow cat or will beating out the stock cat be enough?
