what signs to look for if a PCM is gone bad?

I have a check engine light with no stumble or hesitation, the only thing is that my fans come on right away.... so I got the car scanned and they said that he scanner could not properly rtead the pcm code because it was allways changing! and that it had been modded which it was by pcmforless, so I then contacted Bryan and he said that the pcm is probably shot but I really want to be sure b4 dishing out for a new one and new programming again!

any one have any Idea's??

Who scanned the PCM and what tool did you use?
FWIW, the fans will and should come on every time there's a service engine light present.

I doubt it helps you since you didn't mention any problems, but when my ECM went south the car refused to run correctly in closed loop. Open loop would work perfectly, but everything went to hell in closed loop. Swapping the ECM (and flashing it with the same program as the previous ECM) fixed the problem.
