what should i do with $5,000?
I wouldnt suggest getting a sport bike if you cant control your self on a yz250
But if your wanting a quick and easy way to a 11 second quarter mile thats probably one way to go. My bike actually cost me more than my car did (06 cbr 600rr) but man will it hall *****.
Seriously though, I wouldnt suggest building a 400 rwhp heads/cam car. If it were me, id sell the car, sell the truck, and take out a loan for the rest and get a nice c5 zo6

i've really been considering the 2nd car idea. my buddy has a modded VR6 jetta he might sell me for like $3500...then the other $1500 can go to fixing some stuff on my car...i need a good clutch bad and i'd like to have true duals
If you're spinning through 4th gear, then you need to get new tires or stop driving in the rain.

For the OP, get a beater and do an LT4 Hotcam kit. I loved mine. You can still get good gas mileage, it lopes pretty hard for a small cam, and you'll be smoking mild bolt on LS1's. Then, save for what you break.

You live in southern California and you're worried about a daily driver? Before I saw where you live, I thought you needed something for driving in crappy weather. But no, you want something to commute in. Got it.
Here's how you spend your five grand:
$1500: buy a compact beater car (e.g. '92-95 Civic)
$2500: Strange 12-bolt w/ 3.73 gears and an Eaton posi
$1000: McLeod Street Twin
The next time you need tires, get some Nittos or other DR's in back if you don't already have them.

You also hve to worry about spending $5K on your DD then someone hitting you and totaling your car. That's what happened to me. Paid $4600 for the car, spent $4000 on it and when it was totalled out the ins gave me $5025.31.
Open an account with a discount brokerage and buy some oil company stock. (Exxon, Chevron, BP, etc.). It'll lessen the pain you experience everytime you fill up. It'll give you the false sense that you're actually contributing to your retirement.
If you're willing to pay the additional insurance premiums, you can insure the car for a stated value rather than an appraised value.
