What sets Ed Wright (Fastchip) above the others?

Everyone keeps saying this guy is the absolute best, and I want to believe it. But I am having a hard time justifying the extra 200$ that I would have to pay relative to PCMforless or MadZ28. I could send my pcm in 3 times to the other guys with shipping, and I bet by the third time they would nail it, if not getting super damn close the first time. Keep in mind this is for a mild cam only setup, nothing crazy and there are *no* dyno tuners in AZ that tune LT1's.
The ultimate question is, what makes Ed Wright so much better than the competition relative to other mail-order tunes?

Ed has been tuning probly longer than Ion has been alive and probably even close to as long as Bryan has been too. I have done buisiness with Ion and all went well matter of fact I plan to send him a few more dollars soon for some non-programming work. Used Bryan for years but his service has plumetted and so has my confidence in him, from what I hear though he still is very responsive to new customers just not to old ones like myself.
Jeff Creech did the tune for the AI parts and I am happy, price wise he is between Ed and the others.

I second Jeff Creech. I took a 700 mile trip to NC to get my car dyno tuned by him in september. Picked up a whole lot above the curve and 20-30 rwhp peak over the PCMforless tune. You can only do so much through mail order tuning, since it's not on the dyno and they aren't there, all they can do is make their best guess.
Not trying to throw stones or anything but Me and two buddys both had HORRIBLE results from Ed Wright, and you cant compare a Ed wright dyno tune to someone elses mail order tune thats just not fair. Ed wright wouldnt even talk to me after the third chip he had to burn, I sent him scans and data logs. I finally got fed up with him and bought all the stuff to tune my TPI myself. for my Lt1 I went with Ion at madZ28, he was very fast and the tune worked great. mail order tunes from either pcmforless or Madz28 are going to be just as good as anything Ed wright can mail you. If you want more info on the reasons I wouldnt let ed wright mail order tune my lawn mower PM me. I dont want this thread to be a flame war
I'll pile on for Jeff Creech and CAM. Jeff is the consummate professional, his attention to detail and customer service is unsurpassed. Jeff's patience and ability allow him to attain huge performance levels SAFELY.

You are going to find very happy customers for all 4 tuners mentioned here sofar and every one of them is going to have a few dissatisfied as well and many of those will likely be the customers fault. Do something stupid like "port" a MAF and worse yet not tell the tuner and you are going to make his job VERY difficult especially if mailorder, they could all work around it in person or with thorough datalogs but if you don't tell them about some details it makes thing very hard. Those details you forget to tell one tuner you might have remembered to tell the second and that could be asource of more accurate tuning.
Some of you seem too hungup on the dyno, yes it is a good tool but a perfect dyno tune will likely have too much spark and not enough fuel for the strip. I know some b-body guys that after dyno tuning by one of these tuners went and pulled a couple degrees and added some fuel and went faster, as much as .2 in the quarter that is pretty signifigant when you stop and think about how many of you believe the dyno is the ultimate way to tune.

tunes...
I also had a very crappy experience with Ion with madz28.com... sent me a mail order tune for my cc306/ported heads/bigger injectors and other mods. was running very lean, and surging very badly. emailed him within the first week. and right off the bat, he did not want me to send it in. first he kept saying that his tune was dead on, and that it was something mechanical with my car. which is crap because all sensors, map/iac/tps/02's/plugs/wires/coil/icm. I mean everything was new. well after some heated back and fourth emails, because since he swore he was right, and my datalogger was telling me he was wrong, he finally wanted me to buy the moates burner and supporting hard/soft ware. to make the changes myself. It came to some pretty heated emails. the only time he would return my emails was when I would threaten to let everyone know my experience with him, then he would just email me to let me know that my car was the problem, but he would still not take the tune back, I tried very nicely for 1st.three weeks to get him to make some changes. before I got really upset..finally I said screw it, found someone here in KC to do a live tune on it, and sure enough it was Ion's tune. really lean.. took 4-5 hrs. but after tuning and driving/dattalogging. we got it straightened out, and picked up quite abit of h.p. and smoother driving.
so In my book I would think seriously of a dynotune, and def. stay away from Ion, in my case he wasn't worth crap!! sorry so long. just letting you know what kind of customer service to expect from Ion..

I live near KC and would like to now does he still tune and how much does he charge
For the guys who complain about a mail order tune being wrong.... only thing I would say is you have to pay whoever it is for their time reguardless if it's right or wrong.
Ed is good because he has been doing it so long, and has good contacts. The guy just does the right things and thats evidence of what he does with his own car on the strip. At Englishtown he was running toe to toe with Rick Abare's car in MPH, just couldn't get the track setup down before he had a 2nd gear problem. Both of them were able to cut low 1.3's and 132mph runs.... either way Ed wins since he tuned both cars.

Tuning
Since this is another thread where there is no right answer, here's my $.02:
#1. I had zero positive results from E.W. on a supercharged setup I did at our shop. It took 4 tries to get where he would not speak to us anymore. FWIW, we were on the chassis dyno, sending info to him, he was re-programming......never got it right. We gave up on him and had a Uncle Robin tune it(Mustang Fame). It worked very well his first try.
#2. E.J. in Omaha has done an outstanding job for us in the past on a TPI setup and on a D.F.I. Gen7 setup.
#3. I had my LT1 tuned at F.L.P. by Dan with outstanding results.
#4. MeanGreen had his LT1 tuned by Dan with outstanding results. By outstanding I mean, zero knock counts, 91 octane, 11.3:1 static, 24mpg, 12.3 1/4 with T-56 and 12 bolt and driver new to manuals.
#5. We had Dan @ FLP tune a D.F.I. Gen7 with outstanding results.
#6. Several local (Cedar Rapids IA) guys had their sub 10 second street driven cars(IROC and 2 Mustangs) tuned by FLP. Results all positive.
FLP is in Naperville IL.
Best of luck, there really are several good tuners out there. Getting it done on the dyno is the best way.

rasputin,
Definitely put it on the dyno regardless of whose mail order tune you decide on!
