Re: what programer should i buy?

Only the 93 LT1's used a "chip". '94 and on LT1's tuning capabilities are performed via a handheld programmer or a custom written file that is loaded into your PCM. If you are looking for performance gains with a stock motor, you will most likely want to look at a handheld programmer (there are different manufactures of these, just do some searching on this board for some great recommendations). Unfortunately there will only be a select few changes that you can perform with a handheld programmer that will net you any kind of measurable performance gains with a stock motor ie. shift point changes if you have an automatic trans and cooling fan turn on/off points. You can also re-program for tire gear changes. If you are looking to truely gain some performance from your vehicle, you may want to consider spending that few hundred dollars that a handheld programmer will cost you on some actual performance parts. Look into some other possibilities such as a CAI and/or headers, etc. Again, do a search and you will find some great ideas/opinions. Just something to consider.

i had good luck w/the hypertech programmer 3, both on 95's and 96's. you can turn on fans early, adj shift points, rev limit, top speed limiter, adj for different gear sizes and rear tire heigt, shift firmness, etc. they sell new for about 369.99. i have one slightly used that i might sell for $250.00. email direct to smokingv6@aol.com

Moral of the story is friends don't let friends HyperCRAP(or JET). Custon tuning that is actually good and right for your car will cost hundreds less than that crap. Try pcmforless.com madz28.com Ed Wright or any one of a number of others scattered around the country, any one of them will get you better results and in most cases cost a whole lot less.

Contact "Madwolf". You'll see much larger gains for a fraction of the cost of a Hypertech.

The Hypertech PP3 is a good programmer, it is just not worth $300+. If you can get one for cheap then I say go for it. I got mine for $150 shipped and it was basically new (even came with the stickers). IMO the Hypertech is easily worth the $150 I paid for mine.

Still not worth it because of the limited and poor tuning(slower track times and lower dyno numbers are documented) it offers and that is still more than you would have paid for real tuning from a professional like Bryan or Ion.

Lets put it this way. Pissing in your engine compartment while burning Hundred Dollar bills will do about the same thing a $300 Hypertech will.

Contact Madwolf (Ion) and have them set you up with a tune package gaining you something like 13 rwhp and 17 rwtq on a relatively stock set-up.

I have seen dyono results showing a 5 rwhp loss when not using the 160 thermostat. When using the 160 thermostat the chart shows gains as high as 15 rwhp (rare and highly unlikly). Plus I can change my tires and gears and just reprogram it on the spot. I don't like the fact I would have to pay to have it programed every time I changed tire sizes or gears. I see the Hypertech as good choice until I the mods become big enough (cam) that I need to have a professional tune done.

With a home PC

Used AKM OBDI cable - $35.00
Unlimited email tune package - $45.00
Getting unlimited high quality tunes for hundreds less - Priceless.

For some people wasting time and money is a lifestyle, but for everyone else there is Madwolf tuning.
