What is this piece on my engine?

What is this piece on my engine?

Click the link for the picture. It is located right by the oil filler neck, in front of the EVAP cannister valve. at the bottom of it, there is a hose that exits and goes to the rear for a couple of inches and then ends. Its open. What is this and is bad that its open?

The line is open on all of 'em...

Isn't that the EVAP solenoid?

its a purge valve, figured it out. I dont think 95 and earlier ones had it...Thanks guys!

Its part of the EVAP flow/vacuum detection switch, added to the 96/97 OBD-II cars. Shoebox has a diagram of it - see part #11 for the switch and #15 for the unconnected vent hose. The EVAP solenoid is #7 in this diagram:

Yes, it is the vacuum switch. Put there with OBD-II to monitor the presence of vacuum in the EVAP system.
