What other trannys will bolt up to a '97 LT1

I was just wondering what auto trans like a th-400 or 350 turbo would bolt up and fit my 97 z28 without having to do any major modifications and how could you avoid all the computer controlled crap that goes with the 4l60e. Is this too much to try to do or should i just go ahead and rebuild my 4l60e or is this worth trying??

a TH350 or TH400 will bolt to the block no problem (as long as it has the chevy bolt pattern, anything will bolt up). You will most likely have to modify the cross member by some means to support the rear of the new trans. If you are computer savy, you can take the code for the 4L60E out yourself, or you can get it reprogrammed by the Brian H of www.pcmforless.com or the other popular reprogrammers.

I would only reccommend swapping the tranny if you had major mods and were scared of breaking the transmission. Century transmissions does good 4l60 rebuilds. They dont have a site but their number is 713-666-2616. They build like race 4l60s. If you are dead set on the trannys swap, Get a new tranny crossmember for a th-400 from bmr fabrication, and get the th-400 from yank. hope that helps!

ok, if all em will bolt up then a powerglide would right? I got one of those in my 69' chevelle SS(project car). I know i would probably need some drive shaft lengthening done and i wouldnt be sure if there would be enough room for the top half of it to fit under the firewall. Its only a 2 speed but it would be free untill i could get the 4l60e rebuilt. As for the crossmember i think i could just rig something up to hold it, it may not be perfect and might make some noise but i could deal with it. As for the computer stuff, would pcmforless do everything i would need done to put the glide in it?

yeah bmr has the crossmember for swapping the th-400 and 350 probably power glide(I think they will use the same thing) the major thing is writing out the 4l60 from the computer, then if you put the 4l60 back in, it will agian have to be reprogrammed, but it can be done. Most full on race cars use powerglides anyway.

Yes, but they don't weigh what a 4th gen does! It takes a really good power to weight ratio to use a 'glide sucessfully. But it will bolt up and you could use it in a pinch. I'd be curious how it works out. You don't need to worry about the programming, just leave it there. Getting the speedo to work may be a challenge though. A new driveshaft will also be needed though.
