what kind of timing chain for a 96LT1

Head/Cam swap...I heard its(the chain) different on a 96-97 car cuz of the crank sensor in the timing cover? can I use a cloyes double roller? (3145) or do I need something different

Yes you can use the cloyes double roller with a few mods to the front cover. Delete the crank sensor and also clearance the cover in a couple spots (I haven't done it so not sure where) and you either need a crank hub from a 94-95 or use the reluctor wheel for the crank sensor pick up as a spacer. I'm sure yo already know you'd have to use an E-wp also

Not strong enough for heads/cam purposes / high revving.

Took apart my friend's 90k mile car today.. had more chain slack than I'd be comfortable seeing...

maybe just get the GMPP extreme duty chain kit. 245 from summit.
or you may want to see if gmpartsdirect.com has them cheaper....

you wont have to deal with fitting that double roller in.

my solid roller setup is doing just fine with the oem chain, granted it is brand new but its still OEM. im not saying you shouldnt upgrade, i just think its silly when people do what everyone else does and then that becomes "whats needed."

I agree. Too many people do things just becuase they think they have to because so and so did it. But, In my experience, the LT4 extreme duty timing set is absolute junk for anything but stock. I have had two fail in three years since I stroked my motor. What happens is the water pump gear starts cutting into the cam gear, and puts metal throughout your motor. I am extremely pissed off at such a crappy product! I work for GM, and I have been on the phone with tech line and all that jazz, and I have come to the conclusion that they just have a sh*tty @ss design. So, I am going aftermarket, cloyes or comp, and deleting that stupid mechanical water pump. There are just too many people running the E water pump without problems. So, take it from someone who has already delt with that LT4 "Extreme Duty" BS and don't waste your money. You will be better off in the long run. Plus, e water pumps are way easier to swap out than the damn timing chain.
Just my .02. Take it or leave it!
Good luck.

well im thinkin about going with the E-pump as well...and for a double roller i just dont know how hard it is to get it in the 96...noones exactly been detailed on whats needs to be done. I dont want to(or know how to) delete the crank sensor...and i dont want to have to change this and that and this and that..if its as easy as grinding the cover and putting the chain in...then id do it.

I'm running an LT4 ED chain with the stock gear on the water pump and i'm doing fine. I have over 40k on mine and no problems yet. When i had the motor out for a freshing up the chain had hardly any slack in it (i used the oversized gear originally) so i just reused it. Many here have it and have no problems with it. You realize Cloyes makes the LT4 chains right?

The crank shaft positioning sensor can be programmed out, or just do an OBD1 conversion

As Javier mentioned, the stock set sucks. I could almost remove my chain, that's how loose the ****ing thing was.
