I top at 1st at like 40, 2nd at like 60, forgot 3rd? But 4th at like 118? But I cruise in 6th at like 1500 rpms maybe at like 70 almost?

 

Your numbers don't make any sense. What RPM are you winding it to? What size tires are you running.

For stock 3.42's and 25.65" tires, you would cruise at 1,590rpm at 70mph in 6th gear. If you are only turning 1,500rpm it would correspond to 3.23's.

But, spinning a stocker to 5,800rpm will top out at 48mph in 1st, 72mph in 2nd, etc.... so if you are managing to redline it at 40mph in 1st, it would correspond to 4.10s'.

Something doesn't make any sense.

So it sounds like 4.10's because theres no way I top at 72 in 2nd.

 

If its stock, you have 3.42's. If someone changed the gears, you can have anything.

4.10's will put you close to 1,900rpm at 70mph in 6th gear. You only run 1,500rpm. See how it doesn't make any sense.

 

Well, I did find out that my tach is totally off... my idle is set at 850 and my tach reads 1000. I revved up to 5800 on my tach but I ONLY revved it to 5450... So I guess I don't even know what i'm really at in 6th.

How can I find this out? Is there another way to figure out what gears I have in the differential?

 

1) Jack it up. Rotate both rear wheels exactly one turn. Count how many turns the driveshaft makes.... or - 2) Take the cover plate off and count the teeth on the ring an pinion..... or - 3) Read the true engine RPM on a scanner, and use one of the online gear calculators.

Why do you think the rear is anything other than stock? Have you ever checked the accuracy of your speedometer? What gears did you tell Ion you had when he did your conversion?

 

I think everyone's tach is a little off. Mine is about 200 rpm's high so was my buddie's. What makes you think you have anything besides stock?

 

my car does the same thing, 40 in first, second is 60 or so, 3rd 85, fourth not sure, at 80 im at around 1900 or 2 grand. had ion tune with the stock gear ratio and the speedo is correct, i thought i might have a tranny from a different year, but i dont see that being possible. let me know how it turns out.

 

my care idles at 850 but reads at 1000-1050...checked it was a snap on scanner

A4 stock is 3.23

i dont think you have a set of 4.10's in.. sounds more like 3.73 if ANything!

did you hit the rev limiter or are you going by your tach reading for redline?
