Question What internals mess up when an engine hydro locks?

I am wondering this because my engine hydro locked a while back. I got it to turn on . Heard knocking rev to 1000rpms and it blew oil through the side of the block.

Not sure what caused the block to break either a rod, piston or something else.

Any way fast forward I bought an lt1 rebuilt 20k miles ago. But it has cast iron heads. From a capri. I was wondering if my aluminum heads on my engine the one that hyrdo locked could be re used?

I am paying someone to remove the engine this week. And ill know for sure when it comes out. But i just want to prepare my self $$ wise incase i have to redo the heads or something.

What do you all think? Whats the worst that can happen to the heads? Another thing you think the opti is still good? I had just bought it like 6 months before the engine hydro locked.. It was a oem

Thanks

I've pulled a few LT1's apart that had a rod that was bent in the shape of an "S". This was not a tweak, it was kinked.

The heads and Optispark should be OK. Personally, I would have the heads checked out for cracks and warpage and have the valve job touched up. There had to be a reason your original motor filled up with water and if there was a problem with the head, you don't want to transfer the problem to another motor.

As others stated, rods/bearings, but I'm sure anything is possible. You're heads should be ok barring something catastrophic.

The new motor is from a caprice? Make sure it isn't the 4.3 "baby" LT1.

That's a very good point! The LT1 block will have "327" cast into it. The L99 motor would have a "4.3" casting mark.

usually it breaks the rods - have the heads check to make sure there aren't any cracks or warping before putting them on the new/replacement motor - I wouldn't re-use a crank that has been through that as well

hydrolocking can do everything from stop the engine without damage to destroying everything that you would call "engine" including the heads. Parts have to be individually inspectwed case by case.

personally if its a case of preparing funds, expect the worse and pray for the best. if they don't need anything get them milled and you now have money thats not needed so spend it on mods!!!

On mine it broke a piston and shrunk/twisted the rod! Your heads should be fine, but I'd still have them checked.

My engine sucked up water via CAI when I got caught in a torrential downpour leaving college. I made a bad mistake and water was up to the curb. New motor will never see rain. After pulling the motor and inspecting it had 2 broke rods. #8 and I cant remember the other.

WRONG. 4.3 motors have the 327 casting number as well(because they are the same exact block, except the 5.7 has a larger bore and longer stroke). Where you have to look is the stamp on the back of the block (above where the bellhousing bolts up to) and it will have the factory code, some misc numbers and either a 5.7 or 4.3 on it.
