What the heck is this thing??

I was under my car the other day changing a motor mount and I saw this long black tube sticking down from the air intake tube..... It's just a hollow tube, it rounds off at the end. I have a 95 z28, what the hell is it? what does it do?

The the air silencer on the bellows (rubber elbow conected to the throttle body). It cuts down on intake noise.

You can get one that is just all bellow. Its a 1le bellow with no silencer. You can get it through jason cromer or slp. I wouldnt really just cut it off.

You unfortunately can't just "cut it off" as you will then have a large opening in your intake allowing tainted air to get into your engine = bad.

Some people have done the ghetto rig for it, which is make some sort of fitting that will cover the hole and keeping it there securely.

Or, for approx $40, you can get a 1LE intake elbow, which is the GM intake elbow without the silencer.

well duh..... I meant cut if off and cover the hole up..... Why pay 40 bux for it though when I can "ghetto rig" it? it's not anything people will notice. thanks anyways.

I've heard the pert plus bottle bottoms make a perfect fit, along with some secure tape (aluminum duct or something of this nature) and whala!

You could also get a polished aluminum elbow for $90!

Bottom of a shampoo bottle works great. I put it in then siliconed it in place to make sure it wasnt going anywhere. Worked for well over a year until i ended up tearing the elbow in a unrealated situation.

It's your cars *******!

I made a perfect plug with a 2x4 and shaped it with a belt sander, fits perfect I even contoured it a little on the inside part to keep it from sticking up too much in the airstream.
