Of all the places to cheap out on, the rod, main, and head bolts are the least favorable places to do it. You probably saved $20 by going with cheapo head bolts. Think about this for a second....You're willing to chance your entire motor(not to mention parts and labor invested) to save $20? I wouldn't IMO.
grade 8 is grade 8 isn't it? Just 'cause my mama bought me Toughskins doesn't mean your Levi's are better.

I was thinking about just getting the gasket set from Combo, which are Fel-Pro - I mean they do sponsor NASCAR
The Fel-Pros are fine....different thicknesses will change compression slightly. Best way to pick the thickness of head gasket is to aim for a quench area of .035-.045 . Since my block was decked .005 off of the original .015 I went with the .029 gasket giving me a quench of .039. The Impy gaskets are also $21 each from Jason Cromer...not a bad deal.

youre gonna gain around 3hp by using an impala head gasket. it doesnt bump the compression up much, and is not as well designed as the FelPro 1074. in my opinion, id rather know i am using a quality headgasket than throwing steel shims on there to up the compression a half a point. its just not worth it in my opinion.

No. Take a look at http://www.arp-fasteners.com/pages/tech/tech.html

I would recommend the Fel-Pro or the Cometic and ARP fasteners. I used the FP in the last couple of buildups but am going to try the Cometics this time.

Another vote for Felpro bolts.

You can get them at Autozone too!

That's from the maker. Geez...naturally they are going to say different. They are trying to sell you a bolt.

Mr. Gasket .026" compressed head gaskets and ARP bolts.

The thin gaskets bump the compression on the stock decks and keeps the quench tight but is really pushing what you should be using on an iron block/aluminum headed engine. So far I haven't had any problems though <crosses fingers>

NO WAY! Standard grade 8 bolts are not on the same level as ARP bolts. The materials used by ARP are substantially higher quality, not to mention superior manufacturing processes.

The info in Rich's link is the real deal, whether or not you believe it.

PS-I hated Toughskins.

cometic's are a 3 gasket set binded together a top middle and bottom. they are blow proof and for the high compression/ high boost guys having problems blowing head gaskets. they run about $150 a set so there not for the mild. I am a warehouse dist. for them
