What is grounded at the battery by the red box?

I ask this because my car was missing badly and I found the ground wire by the red box came loose. I re-attached and for the time being the car seems to be running fine. I am curious as to what was being affected.

Well you know your ignition makes more than 20,000 volts. so if the ground to the engine is crap, then how is the ignition going to make a spark?

Yes, ABS module and EBCM or EBTCM (if equipped with traction control) on a 1997. Earlier cars (like mine) also have air bag system grounds there.
