What gear do I have

I have a 96 z, and i was wondering how to figure out what rear end gear my car has.I am going to change one of the axl seals soon, so i will have the cover off.I know that you can count teeth, but what then.How do you figure it out from that.

If you have an M6 you have 3.42, A4 you have either 3.73 or 3.23

I think you meant to post 2.73, not 3.73.

Check the codes on the door sticker (on the edge of the driver's door). There should be a code GU2 or GU5 if your car is an automatic.
GU2 = 2.73's (more likely to have)
GU5 = 3.23's (optional gear)
GU6 = 3.42's (6-speed gear)

Also, when you have the cover off, if you counted the teeth on the pinion and ring gear, you should get 15 and 41 respectively (sorry I don't know the combination for 3.23's..........although I know it's 12 and 41 for 3.42 gears).

Anyway, HTH
