what does the coolant line on the back of the heads do?

what does the coolant line on the back of the heads do?

trying to get an education. what exactly does the coolant line that bolts to the back of the heads on an LT1 do? supply? return? what is it called?

It allows a way for steam pockets that might be formed in the head (due to the reverse cooling of the LT1) to have a way to escape. This keeps the heads from having localized hot spots. Commonly known as the steam pipe. Technically called the engine coolant air bleed pipe.

Most do the TB by-pass mod : running the steam pipe directly to the radiator rather than through the TB. Do search for this mod if you are interested.

The OP has a 94. The line from the back of the heads is already routed directly to the radiator. They changed it 95-97.
