What do you think of this engine?

Hey, Im new here so I would like to thank you all in advanced for all the help. I am by no means a mechanic nor an engine expert so I am looking for your help. I have a 1994 formula with 151,000 on this engine/body. I am thinking of buying a 383 fully built engine when I came across this engine for sale. Let me know what you think the low points, high points, estimated power and overall strength.

This motor is an LT-1 383. As most of you know I blew this motor a couple of weeks ago. I have yet to get the motor out, but should be in the next two weeks. The short block is chads competition block with all forged internals and LT4 timing chain. The Heads and cam are the LE2 setup with port matched intake. The cam specs are 236/236 with a .600/.600 on a 107 LSA (this cam is NOT emissions friendly).

I am buying it from a someone else. They built the engine and has receipts for it all. He is going a different direction so he doesn't need it anymore. It was just all redone.

This is one of a few invoices he has sent me
HST-2M-5523-30 1 Rings $100.00
CLV-MS-909H 1 BEARING SET-MAIN $65.00
CLV-CB-663H(8) 1 SBC Rod Bearing $55.00
DRB-CH-8 1 SBC CAM BEARING $20.00
GM-12370835 1 LT4 ROLLER TIMING SET $300.00
FLP-BS40520 1 SEAL-REAR MAIN $25.00
FLP-OS34500R 1 GASKT-OIL PAN $35.00
FLP-TCS45956 1 LT 1 94-PRESENTGASKT-TIMING COVER $15.00
MEL-M-55HV 1 OIL PUMP $55.00
MEL-IS-55E 1 DRIVE SHAFT-OIL PUMP $10.00
MEL-55-S1 1 SCREEN ASSY-OIL PUMP $10.00
CAT-MB3504 1 Part $25.00
FREIGHT-OUT 1 SHIPPING BACK TO CUSTOMER $185.00
EAG-435337505700 1 CRANKSHAFT $570.00

For comparison purposes. Look at the 396 on special $7999.00... You have to register to see the prices. Golen's is probably more widley known for LT1 stuff but this is worth taking a look at I think. I am not an expert either... but a smoking hot 396 is fun to think about.

What kind of goals are you looking at accomplishing with the car? That will dictate the route you should go. A 396 may not be what you're looking for.

My goal is flexible. Maybe 450 NA with a shot of nitrous down the road.

Let's clarify.

450 at the wheels, or 450 at the flywheel? You'll see my build puts down 450whp through a 9" and an automatic. What type of drivetrain are you working with (gears, clutch, converter, tires, etc.), and what is your overall budget for such a build?

Somehow, it doesn't seem logical to put 4-bolt main caps on an engine with a cast SCAT crank.

Some people will also question the use of the Melling high volume pump with a stock oil pan.

Might not want 6" rods if you are looking as nitrous later - depends how big a shot. The piston crown is going to be thin, and the top ring land shallow.

450 at the flywheel. Right now its stock drivetrain. The engine would sit till i Built the trans and got a new rear. It would be going thru a t56 tho. The guy is asking $4500 for the entire engine. I dont have a real budget just build as i go.

450fwhp is easy. That will translate to about 360whp. Cam-only bolt-on cars are putting down close to those numbers. That motor with LE2s should put down well over 360rwhp - probably closer to 400.

I'll be the first to question using a high-volume pump with a stock pan. While it's been done, you don't want to risk running the pan dry under high RPM situations. For this reason, my 383 is using the Canton 242T pan (with a high volume/pressure pump).

I guess the confusing part is that you linked "Chads" long block, said it was a "short block", but it appears the guy you are buying the engine from didn't buy that, or even a short block. Appears he bought a list of separate pieces.

My bad I have so many numbers running thru my head right now im getting all sorts of confused. I did mean RWHP.
As for the oil pan, I just emailed him about it. I will let you know if it is stock or not.

450whp is much harder to come by. I finally had my 383 dyno'd and it put out the numbers in my sig. Hope you brought your checkbook, because my build totaled over $10k.
