What do guideplates do?

This is probably a newb question, but what exactly do guideplates do? As far as I understand, they just align the pushrods or something don't they? I notice alot of people buying them when they do a cam swap, but I don't really know why. Based on the mods in my sig, would they be recommended?

They keep the pushrod in the proper location between the rocker and lifter. Self aligning rockers(like you probably have) do not use them.

those are self aligning, so you do not need guide plates.
