what direction does rear main seal open end face?

Do you think I should get the proper tool for pressing the rear main into the housing? to keep it square?.. or should a 2X4 and some close attention to detail be good?

Take the seal to Lowes or Home Depot. You can get a PVC pipe that will fit it perfect. I think 4" is what you need(I got a 3" to 4" adapter). If I recall, it will go right around the edge of it which is what you want.
