What is the difference between LT1 and LS1?
. . .and which does a 96' Z28 (NOT SS) Camaro have in it? And what times do they run stock? I get confused when it comes to these engines and know (think) that there are some major differences. Thanks.

The LS1 is all aluminum, and has a more aggressive cam. Intake manifold, rockers, ignition, and exhaust manifolds are all different from the LT1, plus some things I'm sure I've missed. A 96 Z or SS both have the LT1, some 97's came with the LT4 (I think it was just 97). Stock, an auto 96 will run low 14's to high 13's, while a stick will run high 13's or a bit lower in the 13's. As far as hp the Ls1 came w/300 stock, i think (but they were underrated), and an LT1 came with 275 from 93-95, and 285 from 96-97 (supposedly, but all they did was switch to OBDII. The LT4 (which I doubt the car you're inquiring about is) came with around 320-325 at the wheels. All other estimates are at the crank or flywheel.

1993-1997 are all LT1 and should run low 14 or high 13 stock if well driven in favorable conditions. The LS1 began in the f-body in 1998 and is a completely different design engine with no interchangeable parts to the LT1.

The 96 Z28 you are referring to came with the LT1 engine. It was rated 285 hp. Basically, it's the same 350 you could have picked up years ago, but it has fuel injection, and a reverse flow cooling system. The engine first appeared in the 92 corvettes.
The LS1 first appeared in the 97 corvettes, and although it's still listed as a 5.7 it's a tad smaller than the LT1. 346 ci compared to 350 ci. Not that it really matters though. No parts are interchangeable between the two motors. The LS1s have quite a bit more power stock, thanks to a really nice set of cylinder heads. The cam specs are about the same actually. If you look at a set of LS1 cylinder heads, they are set up more like ford heads than traditional chevy. Go figure......
