What constitutes abuse? and how long will the LT1 last?

Just figured I'd post this in here...wondered what you guys constitute as abuse on the engine. I very rarely go WOT, probably once per tank of gas tops...but I do rev to 3000 or sometimes 3500 at least once every couple days. This isn't abuse in my opinion...in fact my mechanic thinks I'm under driving my car some...how many miles do you have on your car and how hard do you drive it? If you're on a different motor, how many did you put on the original LT1 and how much abuse did it hold up to? I've got 74k on mine and don't abuse it at all. Made a total of about 6 or 7 runs at the track just to get an idea of where I was before my mods and after my mods. Before my dad died he had put about 70 or 80k on his roadmaster with the LT1, and his squad car had about 150k of HARD miles on it, only thing they ever replaced on that were transmissions and tires

my car had about 140,000 miles on it when we took it apart and it had 2 or 3 bad lifters, marks on the cam from the bad lifters, and a sliver of the top layer of one of the pistons missing , but it still ran a 14.0 @ 99mph and was capable of a high 13 if he would've hit 4th gear.

you're not abusing your car if you only go WOT once per tank

if you change oil regularly and maintain it well, the LT1 can take a lot of abuse.

but then there's another factor: mechanical sympathy

the best drivers have it

I got WOT once everytime I drive my car. Does that count as abuse?

Revving a stock bottom end past 6500 routinely, launching it off the rev limiter with a Street twin on ET streets etc, now that's some serious abuse. (I dont do either) I do abuse mine way harder than your description though and it's running perfectly at 60k miles. It sounds like you are very easy on your car compared to a lot of the nuts here, I wouldn't worry too much about it

i had a friend who had a 95 m6 and he abused his car really bad. the motor is still holding up and is currently runs a 13.2 with just 4.10's K&N cai, and aftermarket clutch. oh yeah the motor has 185k miles on it. he told me the guy who had it before he bought it had a supercharger on. so im guessing if you maintain it right she'll last a while. my car has 97k on and i beat on it everyother day if not everyday and it seems to still be fine. (knock on wood)

90,000 on my 97 M6 formula.... Its to the floor every time I drive it! I bought the car to race and to be "beat" on.

Previous 96 A4 formula had 150,000+ miles on it and a ton of nitrous during those miles and probally 1,500+ passes between the track and street racing.

LT1s are one tuff motor.

on the same topic.. what about the tranny?

Basically I have 124,ooo on stock block and tranny - neither have been opened up. Basically looking at buying mods or saving for new tranny and rebuild!!!

Is either the block or tranny a ticking time bomb when you reach higher milege?

As long as your oil is clean and the engine is kept in tune & properly maintained going WOT is what these motors were made for. They should hold up fine especially when stock.

When you start modding and power adding like any motor you will shorten the life of an engine.

It is sure nice to here about how good the LT1 is instead of the problems that we here all the time on this board due to the nature of this board.

Yes on average I would say I go WOT every day at least once.

I love the beast!!!!! **** I go WOT in anything I drive!!!!!
