What causes a ring land to break???

I have 86,000 miles on my '95 Z28. I recently had an oil leak that was leaking from the driver side valve cover, and a smaller leak on the passenger side valve cover. I replace those with new fel-pro gaskets. I also replaced my PCV valve since it was right there. Now when I go WOT the engine sprays oil out the dipstick tube and all over the headers. The PCV valve was a new one and rattles when you shake it. I am going to do a leak down test this week and see what I come up with. But my question is, I do not have a boosted car just a cam and bolt-ons. What causes a naturally aspirated engine to potentially break a ring land? Thanks for any input!

Jeff

I have never noticed any detonation from the motor and it has always run smooth up to 6300 rpm. Is there anything else it could be???

You might have another issue with the crank ventalation, what you need to do is, while the engine is running, put your thumb over the PCV & see if its sucting a strong vacuum & the engine drops in RPM, if there is no suction, then something is clogged, this explains why your VCs were leaking, once you fized that, the pressure wen't elsewere (dipstick tube).

A guy a little south of me had a ring land break last winter found it dangerously lean on the dyno while troubleshooting. Had a similar cam and more important to the discussion the same tuner. People don't like to hear it but pcmforless and detonation problems are frequently found together, particularly if you throw hacked up inconsistent heads into the equasion, though it does not look like you have that part of the problem.

No complaints here about my PCMforless mailorder tune. It was a flat 12.5 when I put the car on the dyno. One thing I did have him do was to program in the BLM locker patch.

A lean condition can cause those issues...
