what causes burnt valves?

i was talking with my mechanic friend and he said open longtubes would burn valves. i already asked if our valves will burn with open longtubes and was told no, so what causes burnt valves? is there something special about the LT1 so that the valves won't burn with open longtubes and normal engines they will? what are the symptoms of a burnt valve?

I thought you already asked this

Shorty headers might be a of a little concern, but not long tubes. Do you think all the cars at the strip with open headers are burning their valves? Rhetorical answer=no.

The problem is if the valves cool off too rapidly because of short exhaust piping. Not going to happen with long tubes.

ok thanks

yea last night i asked if i would burn my valves, now i'm wondering what that even means

so i'd assume even at high RPM's it wouldn't hurt anything... hmmm i think its time for a highway run before i take it to the exhaust shop...

Never seen an exhaust problem that resulted in burned exhaust valves. Now if the valve isn't making contact with the seat (improper adjustment etc.) it will burn cause it can't transfer the heat.
The backpressure thing should be categorized with alot of other "urban legends".
