what causes a backfire during starting?
getting out of work today i cranked the car and suddenly i heard it backfire as it started, and it launched the car forwards...
everything seems fine, still idles good, no wierd noises... but wtf? its always had a hard start but this scared the crap out of me.

what usually causes a backfire is built up fuel or flooding. I would seafoam the car through the brake booster line. Then if it doesn't get better look at the plugs if you haven't changed them in a while, then wires, then go bigger like opti-spark. I'm not saying change all this stuff, just visually inspect it. Spark Plugs are more then likely the cause. Good Luck.
By-the-way: I still can't imagine how your car lurched forward....its just isn't possible....who knows

spark plugs are getting replaced this weekend when i do longtubes... i'm thinking i might have a leaky fuel injector that let fuel flood a cylender over the course of 8 hours while i was at work... sound plausable?
Sometimes you can get a "cough" out the intake if you let go of the key too soon just as the engine begins to start. It's not like a real backfire, though. The engine then takes a little more cranking to clear that out, then runs and subsequently starts fine.
As for the car lurching, I have noticed a few time with my A4 that it will seem to momentarily nudge forward when in PARK. I believe it was at startup also. I don't know why. Perhaps it has something to do with one of the electrically controlled solenoids.
