what cam with stock heads?

Ok, so I'm thinking about tackling my next mod....I'm not looking to have any head work done on my LT1 i.e. porting, milling and so fourth I just want the best cam choice that will work with stock heads. I will be installing shorties, 1.6rr & stronger valve springs. Please offer some suggestions Thanks!

Re: what cam with stock heads?

This is probably the most frequently asked question on this forum. Most people will tell you it's the CC503, but I like the AI 226/234.

A search will yield an overwhelming amount of information.

Gears are not a necessity but with a cam it makes the car MUCH more fun to drive allowing you to get into the powerband much quicker.

Depending on if it's a daily driver, street/strip, etc I'd run a Lunati 60121. I have a Hotcam in my DD, something in that size range is easy to get along with, but if I did it again I'd run something more aggressive. XE503 is a good camshaft as well. I'd also look at the XE502 or CC305 on a 112LSA.

RamAir95TA is right, a search will provide days on reading.

Re: what cam with stock heads?

my new theory is get a big cam so when you do new mods the gains are bigger. Most people are on a budget like me so this time I am doing a cc306 so when I do professional heads they will aid the cam dramatically along with (knock on wood) the bottom end.

good luck

Re: what cam with stock heads?

Thanks everyone for the info, Lot's of great choices and I think the cc503 is gonna be the way to go with my application, does anyone have an idea as to the power I should see from this cam? here is my setup as of now k&n cia, flowmaster catback, granatelli maf, TB bypass, keep in mind no heads as of now and probably won't be at the same time cam is installed.

Re: what cam with stock heads?

cc503 and cc306 are close together with stock heads, the cc503 will not give as much power when you port heads well and a bottom end will need a new cam as the cc503 is too small for that

Hands down GM847 is the best for stock heads (best meaning it will make the most power for an off-the-shelf cam).

Re: what cam with stock heads?

But in theory wouldn't the 847 peak higher but not have that broad torque or hp curve of the smaller cams?which cam would make the car go down the track the fastest? My guess is the custom grind from a.I or the cc503. Xfi280 made my car pull like a raped ape with stock heads up top but I bet if I had gone with a smaller cam with more low end torque the car would've been faster at the track. Again this is all in theory and im by no means an expert but I always hear peak hp is for dyno queens and power under the curve is for track kings!!

I have no clue. I've never run on slicks at a drag strip. I would assume an 847 would be the best for stock heads on the strip considering you would be turning high rpm's the whole time.

My assumption is also that you don't want something that makes low end torque on the street because its impossible to get traction on street tires.
