What is a CAM
As far as how a cam effects driveablity, it does move the powerband like you seem to understand. The reason larger cams can be considered unstreetable is because when you get to big that sound that you like gets worse and can make it hard for the motor to run well at lower rpms. The car will surge because it is still loping in your driving rpms. HTH

in a nutshell and VERY generalized-
a "bigger" cam means-
more durration- (valves in the heads stay open longer)
more lift (valve opens further)
more lope (that misfire sound)
more power
and a higher powerband
with that said
please, for the love of GOD, dont do anything with the "I dont care how it works, just make it work" additude
Everything in the engine is a trade off.
there is no best.
"maybe stroke it?" You dont just say "hey while i'm here, might as well just stroke it"
a stroker takes a conciderable amount of time, effort, planning and money. I dare venture to ask if you know what it means to stroke (in a non sexual manner) a motor
dont be so stubborn and ignorant. Go to that howstuffworks website.
I am not trying to flame you. I was where you were (ok, maybe i knew what a cam was
) about 2 years ago. Read this forum, work on your car. read some books. you will learn alot.
You are asking for SERIOUS trouble by just slapping **** together. On top of that, your the kind of kid (and this happens WAAAAY to often) that will pull upto me at a light thinking hes hardcore, having no idea how anything in his car works- and racing me. After he loses I doomed to hear him babble on about his car- which in tern makes me feel that much dumber.
I honestly dont want to hear one more guy talk about how he's dropping in Vtec, bolting on DOHC or ran out of NAWZ
moral of the story. figure out whats going on in there before you tear it apart. a cam swap is hell of a job. timing chains, intake manifold, valve springs/locks/retainers, timing cover, lifters, rockers, pushrods, radiator and ac condenser all have to be removed and reinstalled.
