Question What Cam?

What cam would you guys suggest on my stock 94 LT1? I've just converted to a six speed and am in process of rebuilding the motor. I want something a little better that doesn't require changing rockers or springs just yet. Let me know what you guys got.

Most any cam will require a spring change. You can get the hotcam with spring kit and use the stock rockers.

From what I've heard the hotcam didn't result in all that much difference. I see the GM847 and CC305 mentioned a lot.....I guess if I have to change the springs and such so be it, I just don't want the stock cam back in.

Re: What Cam?

You should do a lot more research not only on the parts you're going to need, but also what cam is best for your specific application. As always, a custom cam will be the best thing since it will be tailored to your specific needs, but you have to decide what you want first. Do you want a drag only car, road racer or a killer street/strip combo? Do you have the drivetrain and suspension to back up a bad *** cam? If you throw a big cam in there just because someone else put down big numbers or low times, you're going to end up very unhappy with your setup. First things I reccommend:

1. Convert to vented opti and get the MSD along with full MSD ignition if you can.
2. Absolutely change the springs and RR for a more reliable and more powerful setup.
3. Hotcam is a great budget project. Of course you're not going to get as high of numbers as bigger cams, but if you want to save money and still make decent power, that's the best way to do it.

Search for the rest, and good luck.

EDIT: I see in your sig you're going with a 383, that will definitely affect your cam decision. Call or PM Bret Bauer and he'll help you out plenty.

Re: What Cam?

The cam really needs to compliment the rest of the setup (heads, displacement, exhaust, etc ..). A cam install of any significance is going to require at least springs (and should include lifters, rockers and pushrods).

Either save your cam money for later or invest a little more in the engine build.
It'll save you stress and money in the long run.

If you want to spend money now for a little more lift, go with 1.6:1 NSA roller rockers and guideplates.
You can keep them once you do cam and heads later on.
