What is the biggest wheel stud I can use with stock wheels?

What is the biggest size wheel stud that will work with stock salad shooters? or will any fit and its just dependant on the lug nuts?

Please give me any info you have!

Are you looking to increase the stud diameter or the stud length? The stock diameter (12.5mm) will handle a lot of HP; it's common to increase the length to fit aftermarket rims. ARP makes a set of longer wheel studs that will fit the salad shooters as the lug nuts are open ended allowing the stud to protrude. It make look a bit funny.

looking to do both. not sure what size i can go with it length and diameter and still fit stock wheels.

im sure with longer studs i would have to keep the centercaps off right?

whats the largest stud i can fit? i want to be able to run weld wheels or similar and the stockers and what lugnuts should i use with salad shooters?

I also would like to know. I have a pair of weld drag lites and stock lug nuts dont cut it. A place to buy them as well.

Again I don't think you need to increase the diameter; I've dyno'd 580 rwhp and I'm running 12.5 mm studs and I launch with ET Streets. Lots of guys are running Weld wheels so hopefully they'll chime in. I suggest you post which Weld wheel you plan to run so somebody can be specific to the stud length you need.

doesnt make any sense at all to me, that if a bigger stud will still fit and work properly, to go with the smaller one.

im probably gonna use either the draglite or prostar.

Weld will tell you what style of lug nut to run; there are several shapes and you have to use the proper style of lug nut. I run Centerline rims that have a straight shank and an outer shoulder that clamps my race rims. Check the Weld website or ask your local tire/wheel dealer...they'll have the Weld catalog to look it up for you.

With the Welds you are talking about, you defintely need a LONGER stud. You do not need a larger diameter stud. In fact, it is rather expensive to go to a larger diameter stud. Not sure how you would do it with a stock front hub or stock rear axle. They only fit a 12mm diameter stud with the correct knurl. If you have an aftermarket rear axle, they will already drilled and threaded to accept a specific stud diameter. My Strange came with 10 holes in the axle hub flanges, for 12mm and 1/2"-20 studs. Those 1/2"-20 studs (only 0.7mm larger than a 12mm) will handle over 1,000HP with no problem... my buddy ran 9.04/155mph in a 3,900# 30th SS convertible, with over 1,100flywheelHP, and 1/2" studs.

So... why would you want to go to the expense of new axles and hubs to fit a larger diameter stud when you don't need it.

As far as length.... if you have stock hubs, you will need to go to GMPP or LPE and get their 2.67" 12mm knurled stud specifically for the 4th Gen F-Body. They will pass NHRA tech, because they will engage approx. 1/2" of the stud threads in the hex portion of the lugnut. Stock length studs will not pass tech, and are dangerous with the Welds. Weld requires an "extra long shank mag-style" lug nut with washer. Nothing else will work with those wheel.

The 2.67" studs will not allow you to use any stock closed-end lug nuts. They are too long.

Then when you buy your 9-inch, have it built with 5/8" studs. Have your stock wheels drilled to match. You will be wasting money, and adding unneccesary weight to the car, but you will have the strongest parts.

Measuring one of my old stock front studs...

Overall length = 2.14"

rear "button" and knurl = 0.55"

knurl to end of threads = 1.25"

plain end = 0.34"

The knurl diameter on a "used" stud measures 0.479".

The LPE/GMPP longer 12mm studs are advertised as 2.67", but they are even longer than that when measured overall, and include more than 1/2" of unthreaded "plain end", that is supposed to help you mount the wheels over the studs. Unfortunately, they will stick wayyyyyyy out of a "normal" street wheel stud.

This is how far they stick out of a ZR1 replica with the lugs that came with the ZR1's drilled and tapped.

Front studs

One reason why I don't run the car on the "street" any more.
