what are the best swap in gears?

what are the best gears to go with that will not whine, but will last long and are fairly priced. im going with a set of 3.42s if it makes any difference. maybe ill get lucky and come across a complete rear on here for cheap.

PS- this is going to be a probable winter mod, as i cant afford too much of nothin right now

A good quality ring and pinion, if properly set-up should not whine
regardless of ratio. As far as what ratio to go with, it all depends on what you want and what kind of set-up you have. Personally, I have a 4.10 gear set because I love the acceleration!

If you look on Mosers' web sight he says harder gears will whine a little because they have more nickel in them to make them stronger. So a little whining isn't always a bad thing.

Get GM gears, you can't go wrong that way. Or if you plan to do the swap yourself and have never done it before try and find a used rear like you said. Get em out of a 6spd car and make things a whole lot easier on yourself cause you'll already have 3.42's from the factory. Possibly cheaper too, especially if your having the gears install professionally.

im gonna have em installed at a shop or someplace. ive heard that if you dont have the knowledge/experience in doing a gear swap then its best to have it done by the people who do. by the way who makes the stock gears in our cars. motive, superior, or gm theirself (ive heard different things)?

GM Motive gears. If your getting them installed and you are for sure going with the 3.42's you might have better luck getting a complete used rearend at a better price than a gear install. That's the route I'm taking anyway. But I need rear brakes two so I save money by buying a rear with used brakes and get a gear swap(so to speak) in the process. Either choice you'll be very pleased with the performance over 2.73's and gas mileage is still good too.

I've got a Richmond ring and pinion in my SS. Richmond is my personal favorite. I've installed many Richmond gears in everything from 4x4s to bracket cars. Most of the gears that have a high nickel content are drag race only gears like the Richmond Pro Series gear. You would not want to run one of these on the street. I also agree that you probably will not go wrong with a GM gear.

3.42 or 3.73 are both good all-around choices. 4.10 is a little extreme if your car is a daily driver. My car only gets about 1,000 miles a year put on it.

so basically i should search for a complete rear off a 6spd b/c the gears are already in there (plus that'll give me an extra one to beat on ), and itll be cheaper b/c i wont have to pay for installation. and if im unsuccessful at finding one then i should go with just a ring and pinion set of motive 3.42s or 3.73s...understood

Exactly, just make sure the rearend is out of a 94 or newer car and make sure it's a 6spd car 2. I think 93's came with 2.73s but 3.42's or 3.23's were a rare option. Also as you know if it came out of an auto car you won't find 3.42's in the rear ever. I went and looked at a rearend that was a nice price but it ended up being exactly what I already had, turns out the guy thought I just wanted a replacement rearend, he didn't know I wanted that specific gearset so he blew off my question of a 6spd car. I've found a couple other local junkyards around me that have em but they want a little more $$ than I've seen people sell them for on here, so I'm just holding out. Still cheaper than a gear install. Also sometime down the road you can build your existing rear to handle some serious power while it's just laying around, or beat the crap out of it til it dies like you said, then put in the gears.
