What is the best 350-400 rwhp setup that is emissions legal? im in cali
Im looking for suggestions to make a 350-400 rwhp Lt1 but it must be emissions legal. I would think i would have to use heads and a cam to achieve my goal and if it doesnt make quite 400 I got a wet kit already that i havent installed yet. Please offer all suggestions, right now the car is pretty stock. Cai, slowmaster muffler, e-cutout and 1le elbow. The whole car has about 64k miles.

supercharger
although 350rwhp shouldnt be hard on h/c. seen alot of guys get nearly that with somehting small like the hotcam. i'm sure you can step it up a little with good heads and make more while still staying legal. hard part is gonna be getting it to breath through the exhaust you have to run.

Hey guy im in Cali check my sig im running through smog legal midtubes. And im running a CC503 Bryan from PCMforless said this is the biggest cam i could go passing smog i havent had to do it yet but i take his word for it.I will hit the 400 RWHP mark after i swap out to a bigger throttle body
Heres the thread i started on my dyno runs and what the cam sounds like going through an e-cutout http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=442945

I am sure you could run something close to the LE1 package and still pass emissions. Talk To Mr. Elliot about it and see what he says.

Thanks for the suggestions so far keep them coming. I thought about the supercharger, lets say if I got one today and installed it how long would it last on my stock engine?
The fear of throwing a rod or something is what makes me want to stay NA but i wouldnt mind going supercharger either.

A supercharger is probably actually easier on your engine. It does not create boost until you are on the throttle quite a bit. I'd go with fully ported heads from a reputable shop, and an aftermarket cam (cc503 or smaller). You will save lots of money goin heads/cam instead of a supercharger and you can still hit 400rwhp smog legal.

I'm in the same boat over here in MA.
Great thread for me too since I plan on doing the same this coming winter. Does anyone know if the cc305 makes worse emmision numbers compared to the cc503? Same deal for the GM hot cam. Thanks guys.

I've had a friend with a 50,000 mile stock Z28, nothing but a few bolt ons fail smog. He had to run around freaking out until he found someone to 'massage' things for him so he could pass.

Well if your buddy all he had a a few bolt-ons didnt pass there evidently must have been something wrong 50 k or not with the car.And as far as word of mouth Bryan tunes these cars day in and day out dealing with people in smog states. If you dont get really high in the duration and keep the LSA in the 114 range he will have no problem passing smog with a fresh converter and o2 sensors. And yeah peoples cars are different, people that know what the hell they are doing and people who dont

350-400 quite a difference. 340-370 quite achievable with the right combination, especially if your talking emissioins laws. 400 rwhp (without the nos) pretty ambitious goal without bigger cam and heads.
SC pretty expensive when considering the cost including intercooler and reducing the CR.
350-360 range will give you plenty of performance street wise and if you add some gears will pull stomps. JMHO

I have been told by a couple of tuners that a CC503 would pass CA smog,
but based on my results with the Crane 227 (210/224), I doubt that it
will pass. Maybe with a special tune, special prep (like changing the tstat),
and an ideal exhaust setup, you may pass. The cars I have seen pass with
the hotcam have barely passed, and I barely passed with the Crane 227.
It's possible that with a special tune, tstat change, etc. I would have passed
with more margin, but not enough to make me take a chance on a CC503.
Without a SC, 350 rwhp is probably doable smog legal, but the camshaft
needs to go beyond 350 will make passing difficult.
