What are the benefits of using a LT4 Starter?

Just as the topic states and also is there anything I need in particular or will it bolt up perfectly.

Someone told me that its just as good as the Stock starter but just a little lighter.

Any specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Claude

My understanding is that the unit is lighter, more starting torque, and is built in a way to resist heat build-up, causing slow cranks.

From what I've heard about them they are cheaper than the LT1, lighter, have more torque and a different sound. They are supposed to bolt up without a problem. I certainly wouldn't buy one if my current starter was working fine, I would go with one if my stocker ever goes though.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah my starter has almost ~100K miles on it and has been acting up lately so I plan to put a new one in when I have my custom Y-pipe made up and installed.

Also, Is anyone here currently using one, mabee they want to chime in with thier results?

Thx,
Claude

Cool

When mine went south i replaced it with an LT 4 one. No regrets here. Unit looks like it is built to last forever.

The LT4 starter is more powerful, lighter, and stronger it bolts up with no problems, to a stock vehicle. If you have longtube headers you may run into trouble. I had to heat up one of the primaries on my FLP's and dent it in to clear the starter. The bracket that hold the solenoid to the starter is on the top and bottom of the LT1 starter, but on the sides of the LT4 starter. So I had to grind the bracket a little bit then dent in the primary. Another plus is that it is cheaper and does not require a core, the LT1 starter has a core charge.
