What all controls timing....

I was wondering what all controls timing....seems i have a problem with my timing because my car won't start...it just backfires through intake and never starts.....i just put a new cam in and now i have this problem....i have fire and gas....just not at the right time.....i know that the cam is in right and i know that the computer isn't the problem because i switched it out so i was wondering on the crank position sensor that obdII cars have.....Does that control timing? I am trying to get this car running asap....THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Wish it was something that simple......I will be going to get the car in lufkin soon but i live in dallas now so i'm just trying to find out something before i go back......I think that the opti will only go one way anyways.....but i will give it a try.....

The opti does indeed only go in one way ... this is very important .... make sure the dowel on the cam is engaging the opti properly. Some comp cams did not engage 100% and this has led to problems.

You should double check your wires ... back firing through the intake is often a sign of a crossed wire or 2.

Bad wires in the correct order will also permit backfires.

Hope this helps

I would check the opti dowel pin. I put mine in the opti first and then put through the timing cover, spun it around until I thought I found it and pushed it in. The car wouldnt start, just popped a couple times and died. After going through everything I finally took the opti off and tried to pull the pin out. It was jammed in, I finally got it out. I turned it around and put in the timing cover until it slid in with no resistance. The car started right up.

That or check that your wires arent crossed.

You should check your plug wires and sorry to say but you may have degreed the cam.... You have to make sure that you take the timing chain off and put it back on in the EXACT same position. Even 1 tooth off can completely screw your timing up.

Well I know for a fact that the plugs are right and the cam is lined up dot to dot.....no matter where you took the cam out....if you line it back up dot to dot then it will be correct....right? All of the cylinders measure the same...at 180 so if the cam was in wrong wouldn't there be some inconsistancy? Maybe the opti is just on the rag and needs changed again....

Sounds like your opti is dead.

Well it's still putting out a charge....I had a friend hook a timing light up to it and it's getting fire....also i laid a spark plug up to the steering knuckle and it sparked...so if it is sparking then is it good or could it still be bad even if it is still putting out a charge?

Check the position of the opti. People put them on wrong all the time.

BTW, the crank sensor is not used for any timing control on the LT1. It's just for misfire detection.

Someone help this poor bast-rd!!!! I'm sick of his whinning....

Look yall He has fuel-spark and the timing on the cam was checked three times by two people.. and the computer we removed and put into a 97 t/a and it turned over first time. does anyone think it could be the crankshaft postion sensor? would that cause the opti to fire at the wrong time? the damn thing is back firing through the intake sometimes so its got to be firing and burning fuel... Whats Going on????
